Developers and data center operators are increasingly approaching community leaders with proposals for building data centers within their municipal or utility service boundaries. These new opportunities are prompting water systems to consider the potential impact a data center will have on water supply, water and electricity demand, and economic development. The potential for tax base and jobs is weighted against the demand on resources.
