Workshop Report: Groundwater Management and Economic Development Opportunities in East Texas

On October 14th, Water Finance Exchange (WFX) co-hosted an event alongside Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) that convened representatives from local communities, state agencies, regional utilities, and non-governmental organizations in Palestine, Texas to discuss sustainable groundwater management and the role of water in economic development. The workshop highlighted the value of long-term planning and data collection in developing and implementing sustainable groundwater policies.

Three panels comprised of local community leaders, subject matter experts, and staffers at non-governmental organizations provided insight into considerations for long-term water use planning, groundwater management considerations and the regulatory authorities of groundwater conservation districts, and water as a catalyst for economic development.

Representative Cody Harris (R-Palestine) provided closing remarks that highlighted advances in water legislation at the recent 89th Legislature Regular Session and subsequent summer special session. He highlighted local engagement in water issues, the widespread consequences of groundwater depletion, rural communities as a key focus for funding allocated by Proposition 4, and offered a glimpse into the 90th legislative session.

This event was made possible thanks to generous funding provided by the T.L.L. Temple Foundation. More than 60 leaders from across the state attended the workshop, including representatives from at least 10 East Texas communities.
